Sparta FC04G Dominate in Spring Kickoff

By Clay Rasmussen 02/06/2018, 9:00am CST

The U90 Spring Kickoff might want to change its name to the Bone-Chilling, Wind Whipping Kickoff. Facing freezing temperatures and a stiff 30 mph wind, Sparta FC04G crushed cross-town rival Dallas Texans FW to capture the Gold championship title.

Sparta opened the tourney with its most complete game in a 1-0 win against the Dallas Texans South team. Forward Merrill Kruemcke's goal snuck in over the goal line when DT goalie went down and misplayed the shot. The defense shut out the potent DT offense and secured the win.

Saturday morning, Sparta faced more freezing weather and a strong win, beating Sting East Shepard 3-1. After giving up an early goal when a shot deflected off our sweeper, forwards Graycen Rasmussen and Kruemcke combined for 3 goals to take a lead in pool play.

In the nightcap, Sparta faced Solar's Champions League team. The Sparta defense held strong with Solar having the wind advantage blanking Solar, and in the second half, with the Solar goalie cheating out of the goal, Rasmussen struck back of the net with a shot outside the box to give Sparta the 1-0 win.

All that remained to complete the sweep were the Dallas Texans FW and a cold, brutal wind. Again, the Sparta defensive back line of Minna Adawi, Alyssa Villavicencio, Brooklynn Langford and Harper Saxon faced an offensive attack aided with a 30 mph wind. The defense only gave up one quality shot and turned the wind over to the offense in the second half tied 0-0.

With the wind, Sparta went to work early. Villavicencio scored off a deflection from a corner kick to give Sparta a 1-0 lead. Outside mid Sydney Dickson sent a shot on goal off of a slide pass through the box by Anessa Garcia. With a 2-0 lead, Rasmussen put the nail in the Texan's coffin with a 30-yard shot to the top left corner and a 3-0.

"We played so well Friday night, and again Sunday night in really brutal conditions," head coach Lee Hefley said after the game. "We still have work to do up top, but our backline right now is keeping us in games and giving us chances."

Sparta now readies itself for the Lake Highlands Spring Roundup. They will face some of their toughest competition to date, including #1 ranked D'Feeters Voutier. The last time the two faced, it was the Championship game of the Plano Labor Day tournament. "It would be nice to avenge that 3-0 loss," Hefley said. "I think we have become a better, tighter team since that game."
