Three days later Casey Wright still couldn’t fathom what his Sparta FC Girls 08 squad pulled off at the Upper90 Challenge in Plano.

With just nine players on the roster (teams play with nine players in this age group) the team went 5-0 to win the title in the span of 36 hours.

“I still can’t believe what these girls pulled off,” Wright said. “It’s amazing.”

Sparta 08 defeated NTX Celtic FC 08G Talvarea, 4-3, in the title game Dec. 2. The finale ended around 8 p.m. and completed a day that saw the girls win three games.

“It was a long day since we needed to leave about 5:30 a.m. to get to Plano for our first game at 8 a.m.,” Wright said. “They were dead going into the championship game but they pulled it out. They played with so much heart. I’ve never seen anything like it. This team is special.”

The squad is made up of mostly 10-year-olds. Playing for the team are Lia Fenton, Kelsey Gilmore, Jordan Hanes, Jayde Hudson, Jordyn Latimer, Isabella Marquez, Sophia Hodges, Jovanika Whitaker and Isabella Wright.

Coach Wright said the key to winning the title was the training and work the girls put in leading up to the tournament.

“We did a lot of running at the Centennial track to get their endurance up,” Wright said. “All that effort worked in our favor.”

The players parents also played a role in claiming the title. Coach Wright said the parents were responsible about what they fed the players between games. Coach Wright also had a solid plan to deal with having no subs. That revolved around a lot of stretching before and after matches.

The squad also adopted a team mentality for the tournament.

“They know that they have to play total team ball,” Wright said. “They knew a lot of teams were going to try to hit us with energy and overwhelm us with their depth and numbers. But they knew if we are the smarter team and play situational soccer we could overcome anything.”

In pool play, Sparta 08 defeated Dallas Texans 5th 08G, 4-2, Sting 08 Cuevas, 2-0, and East Texas Wildcatters SC 08G Balboa, 4-2.

In the semifinals the club topped Liverpool 08 Girls Heighway, 3-2.

10G finish 4v4 career!

By Bryan Emig 05/07/2018, 9:45am CDT

The Sparta FC 10G finished off their 4v4 career by winning their division in the 2018 Spring ASA league. They finished the season undefeated with a record of 9-0-1 with their last game ending in a 3-3 tie.

"Teamwork makes the dream work" and these girls played as a team all season. Everybody took a turn at offense and defense. They battled back from a couple 4th qtr deficits to take the win. They had 3 shutouts as well. Along the way they accomplished almost every season goal we set.

1st - in division standing

1st - in goals allowed

1st - in goal differential

Scored 1st in every game played

2nd - in goals scored

They were one win from finishing a perfect 10-0.

They now start playing 7v7 full time and have new goals to be accomplished!

"Respect all but fear none!"

Come from behind victory for 3rd in a row!

By Bryan Emig 09/24/2017, 5:45pm CDT

After a slow start that saw the 10 Girls fall behind 3-0 and 5-2 at the half, the girls fought back and dominated the 2nd half.  Led by Mackenzie and Piper each scoring 3 goals in the game, they outscored Kernow Storm 6-1 the 2nd half for an 8-6 win and the girls earned their 3rd win in a row and moved into 2nd place in their division. They fought hard all the way to the end. Great effort by the girls!!

Up next is Ennis Thunder next sunday.

10 Girls get 1st Academy win!

By Bryan Emig 09/20/2017, 1:00pm CDT

After a rough start to the season losing to Texas Lightning 2-7, which saw the team suffer from a bit of "stagefright" as it was their 1st ever Academy game, the 10 girls came back strong and dominated NTX United 14-2. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the 1st qtr and never looked back. Scoring was spread out among all 7 girls playing that day. It was a great effort by all the girls!

Up next is FWFC-Sole '10 on thu night followed by Kernow Storm on sunday.
